At first glance, the Aeronaut and Techonaut look nearly indistinguishable. Both have the same unmistakable DNA: flexible packing space, rugged profile, and the sort of durability that happily logs thousands of miles. But as similar as they appear, each bag was designed with a different kind of traveler in mind – something that becomes clear once you look a little closer.
Lately, we’ve been hearing a familiar question: “Which one is actually right for me?” This got us thinking: it’s the perfect time for a fresh, side-by-side look at the similarities and the subtle yet important differences between the Aeronaut and Techonaut.
But first, a little history lesson.
Aeronaut
Released in the mid-2000s, the Aeronaut 45, previously known as the Aeronaut Maximum Carry On Bag, is the ultimate one-bag travel duffel. It’s made for travelers who need their bag to swallow days’ worth of clothes and dedicated organization, so the small things don’t go missing. In 2014, the Aeronaut 30 was introduced – the same bag, just slightly smaller to better accommodate different travel needs and body types. The Aeronaut 45 and 30 have been staples in our lineup ever since.
Techonaut
Let’s just say the Aeronaut walked so the Techonaut could run. In 2021, we updated the Aeronaut's design to include features that customers had long requested, and the Techonaut was born. Like the Aeronaut, the Techonaut comes in two sizes: 45 and 30 liters.

So, which bag is right for you? Both bags will get you where you’re going – the real question is how you like to travel. Think about your habits, your gear, and the way you move through airports, train stations, or the backseat of a rideshare. One of these will fit that rhythm better than the other.
Choose the Aeronaut if:
-
You want a straightforward, wide-open duffel.
-
You don’t need a laptop compartment – or you prefer keeping your tech in its own sleeve or separate bag.
-
You need two expandable end pockets to make your packing life easier (think shoes, laundry, or anything you want to keep quarantined).
-
You are a big fan of O-rings – there are 11 waiting for you.
-
You’re a one-bag traveler who values simplicity and flexibility over extra structure.
Choose the Techonaut if:
-
You want the Aeronaut’s spirit with updated comforts built in.
-
You need fast laptop access for whenever inspiration hits.
-
You prefer more built-in organization and a backpack-first carry.
-
You travel with rolling luggage and want a pass-through sleeve to do the heavy lifting.
-
You like your travel bag to be roomy but also a bit more structured for day-to-day use.
